Best Elderberry Supplement for Cold or Flu

Updated: Jan 5, 2020

Cold, Flu? How about some elderberry? Some experts recommend elderberry to help prevent and ease cold and flu symptoms. The berries and flowers of elderberry are packed with antioxidants and vitamins that may boost your immune system. They can help tame inflammation, lessen stress, and help protect your heart, too.

There are about 30 types of elder plants and trees found around the world. The European version (also known as Sambucus nigra) is the one most closely tied to your health and healing. Its history dates as far back as 400 BC, and Hippocrates, the “Father of Medicine,” called the elder tree his “medicine chest.” In folk medicine today, the elderberry is widely considered one of the world’s most healing plants.

Sambucus is a genus of flowering plants in the family Adoxaceae. The various species are commonly called elder or elderberry. The genus was formerly placed in the honeysuckle family, Caprifoliaceae, but was reclassified as Adoxaceae due to genetic and morphological comparisons to plants in the genus Adoxa.

In one randomized study of 60 adults with flu-like symptoms, those who took 15 mL of the elderberry syrup four times a day saw symptoms clear up on average four days earlier than those who took a placebo syrup.

Another study tested its effectiveness in air travelers. Those who took the elderberry syrup had a shorter duration of cold symptoms that were less severe than the control group.

So for most people, it likely wouldn’t hurt to include elderberry as part of a healthy diet before flu season, along with foods high in vitamin C, vitamin B6 and vitamin E, to support the immune system. Of course, check with your doctor, and make sure you select a quality product.

It’s also been used as a treatment for:

Warnings:

  • Unripe, uncooked berries or flowers from the plant can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Larger amounts can cause even more serious poisoning.

  • Because it’s a diuretic, be careful when you take it if you’re on medicines that make you pee more.

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you shouldn’t take it.

  • People with immune problems might have reactions to elderberry.

  • Other parts of the elder tree, including the branches, twigs, leaves, roots, and seeds, are toxic. They contain a type of cyanide called glycoside.

A good ORAC supplement should contain at least 3000 ORAC units in the form of high-ORAC* value foods such as blueberries, cranberries and elderberries. ORAC refers to Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity, which is a method for measuring the antioxidant.
