Digestive Enzyme Function

Updated: Oct 12, 2019

Digestive Enzymes are essential for healthy digestion and a healthy body function. An enzyme is a type of globular protein found within a cell that controls biological reactions. Enzymes work with other chemicals in the body, such as stomach acid and bile, to help break down food into molecules for a wide range of bodily functions.

The enzymes in your body help to perform very important tasks. These include building muscle, destroying toxins, and breaking down food particles during digestion. Enzymes are produced naturally in the body.

Digestive enzymes are substances produced by our bodies that help us to digest the foods we eat. They are mostly produced in the pancreas, stomach, and small intestine. But even your salivary glands produce digestive enzymes to start breaking down food molecules while you’re still chewing. They break down food components such as proteins, carbohydrates, and fats.

It is important to maintain a healthy digestive system because your body needs nutrients from food and drink to work properly and stay healthy.
