Updated: Oct 11, 2019

The Effects of Avocado are so many! It’s often referred to as a 'superfood', which is not surprising given its health properties, rich in 20 different vitamins and minerals. This is rather a unique fruit of the avocado tree, scientifically known as Persea americana, with probable origin in South Central Mexico.

There are many types of avocado that vary in shape and color — from pear-shaped to round and green to black. The most common one is the Hass avocado.

Avocados are very nutritious and contain a wide variety of nutrients. This is coming with 160 calories, 2 grams of protein and 15 grams of healthy fats. Although it contains 9 grams of carbs, 7 of those are fiber, so there are only 2 "net" carbs, making this a low-carb friendly plant food and low in sugar.

Avocados contain more potassium than bananas and is a high-fat food; 77% of the calories in it are from fat, making it one of the fattiest plant foods in existence. But they don’t just contain any fat. The majority of the fat in avocado is oleic acid, associated with reduced inflammation and shown to have beneficial effects on genes linked to cancer. The fats in avocado are also rather resistant to heat-induced oxidation, making avocado oil a healthy and safe choice for cooking.

Avocados are also rich in fiber, which helps you feel full longer. It’s indigestible plant matter can contribute to weight loss, reduce blood sugar spikes and is strongly linked to a lower risk of many diseases.

According to some tales, the Aztecs even kept their vulnerable young women inside during the avocado growing season.

Eating avocados can lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels. They are also high in antioxidants and in lutein, a nutrient that protects your eyes by reducing risks of cataracts and macular degeneration. They also contain folate, which is crucial for cell repair and during pregnancy.

Avocados are great for your skin. Being rich in fatty acids, is excellent as a moisturizer and repairs deep wrinkles.

They are also great for your hair. Historical evidence shows that as far back as early Egypt people used avocado to prevent hairloss and as a natural moisturizer.
