Ways to Improve Mental Health

Updated: Oct 9, 2019

Mental health is a state of well-being, a state of someone who is "functioning at a satisfactory level of emotional and behavioral adjustment" or an absence of mental illness. It is important to be aware on how to maintain a stable mental health.

Mental health problems affect around one in four people in any given year. They range from common problems, such as depression and anxiety, to rarer problems such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Anxiety disorders are different, though. They are a group of mental illnesses, and the distress they cause can keep you from carrying on with your life normally. For people who have one, worry and fear are constant and overwhelming, and can be disabling.

Stress is a response to a threat in any given situation vs. Anxiety, on the other hand, is a sustained mental health disorder that can be triggered by stress. Anxiety doesn't fade into the distance once the threat is mediated.

Depression affects an estimated one in 15 adults (6.7%) in any given year. And one in six people (16.6%) will experience depression at some time in their life.

Some of the main groups of mental disorders are:

  • mood disorders (such as depression or bipolar disorder)

  • anxiety disorders.

  • personality disorders.

  • psychotic disorders (such as schizophrenia)

  • eating disorders.

  • trauma-related disorders (such as post-traumatic stress disorder)

  • substance abuse disorders.

"OCTOBER IS DEPRESSION AWARENESS MONTH"

Depression affects an estimated one in 15 adults (6.7%) in any given year. And one in six people (16.6%) will experience depression at some time in their life. Depression can strike at any time, but on average, first appears during the late teens to mid-20s. Women are more likely than men to experience depression, in fact, some studies show that one-third of women will experience a major depressive episode in their lifetime.

Tips for maintaining good mental health:

Spirituality or religion

For some people, being involved in spiritual or religious practices can improve well-being, help in coping with stress and reduce symptoms of mental illness. This can include belonging to a faith community, meditation, prayer, mindfulness or practices such as yoga and Tai Chi.

Physical Activity

Regular physical activity is probably one of the most important habit you can to benefit your health. Exercise has a lot of positive outcomes such as weight control, prevention of illness and a lot more. Physical activity happens to be one of the effective ways to deal with stress and depression. Try to fit a regular routine of exercises. Find something that is fun and matches your abilities and you will appreciate exercising regularly.

Build relationships

Having good relationships with other people is the most important factor contributing to a sense of well-being. This can include family, friends, workmates and others in the community. Investing time and energy in your relationships can lead to great benefits for all involved.

Identify and use your strengths

We all have different strengths and weaknesses but finding out what you are really good at and using those talents can increase well-being. Using your strengths to help others or contribute to the community creates a sense of meaning and purpose.

Become an Ambassador

Making a contribution to the community, however small, increases social well-being. Many people feel a sense of contributing through meaningful work, but this could also mean volunteering, helping a neighbor or performing small acts of kindness. Take some time to do the things you really enjoy. Pleasant events can lead to positive emotions that can cancel out negative feelings.

Create flow

Flow is the state of being so highly involved in an enjoyable activity that you lose track of time. This usually happens when the level of challenge is about right for your level of skill. Flow can happen during work, hobbies, creative arts or sports.

Seek help

If you are struggling to feel happy, cope with everyday life, find meaning or feel connected to others, see your doctor or a mental health professional. Almost half of the population will experience a mental disorder at some time in their life — depression, anxiety and substance abuse are the most common disorders.
