What is a free radical scavenger?

Updated: Oct 9, 2019

Free radical scavenger is a substance, such as an antioxidant, that helps protect cells from the damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that are made during normal cell metabolism (chemical changes that take place in a cell). In other words, a free radical is any molecule with a single, unpaired electron.

Substances that generate free radicals can be found in the food we eat, the medicines we take, the air we breathe and the water we drink. Free radicals are the natural byproducts of chemical processes, such as metabolism.

Free radicals are associated with human disease, including cancer, atherosclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and many others. They also may have a link to aging, which has been defined as a gradual accumulation of free-radical damage.

Some Free Radicals external sources are as the exposure to X-rays, ozone, cigarette smoking, air pollutants, and industrial chemicals.

Antioxidants keep free radicals in check. Antioxidants are molecules in cells that prevent free radicals from taking electrons and causing damage. Antioxidants are able to give an electron to a free radical without becoming destabilized themselves, thus stopping the free radical chain reaction.

Oxygen in the body splits into single atoms with unpaired electrons. Electrons like to be in pairs, so these atoms, called free radicals, scavenge the body to seek out other electrons so they can become a pair. This causes damage to cells, proteins and DNA when your body uses oxygen, it creates free radicals as a by-product and the damage caused by those free radicals is called "oxidative stress."

  • Vitamins – Vitamins A, C, and E are all free radical scavengers that work to protect us from free radical damage.

  • Minerals – Like vitamins, certain minerals such as selenium, copper and zinc have free radical scavenging properties.

  • Alpha Lipoic Acid - is sometimes referred to as the “universal free radical scavenger” because of its unique ability to function in both water and fat.

  • Pycnogenol - helps to protect the body’s tissues from typical oxidative stress and supports a healthy, balanced immune response to normal metabolic stress.

  • Resveratrol – This polyphenol is naturally found in the skin of red grapes, certain berries, and other plants. Is better known for its cellular anti-aging properties, as well as for its ability to promote a healthy response to biological stress.
